Early Life

Leonard Albert Kravitz is regarded as one of the preeminent rock musicians of our time and he has been in the industry for over three decades. Lenny Kravitz became a non-denominational Christian at 13. He usually spends his weekends at his grandmother Bessie’s house In Brooklyn while he spends his weekdays attending P.S. 6 elementary school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan with his parents.

At age 3, He used Pots and Pans as drums in the kitchen. He told his parents at age five that he wanted to be a musician.

Lenny Kravitz’s parents were also the reason why he loved music early because while growing up, he was exposed to different genres of music such as R and B, classical, jazz, blues and gospel.

When he was 7, he had the opportunity to watch the Jackson 5 perform at Madison Square Garden.

In an interview, he said he is half-Jewish and still identifies as a Christian. He doesn’t joke about the place of spirituality, which also plays a role in his growth.

Spirituality was prominently featured in his tattoo inscribed with “My Heart Belongs to Jesus Christ”, the tattoo was written on his back. One of his albums was titled “Baptism”.

Career

It all started in 1985 when Lenny Kravitz met his Bassist, Henry Hirsch, Keyboardist and recording Engineer. The same year, he recorded a demo at his Hoboken, New Jersey.

Kravitz also met with Karl Denson, a saxophonist who joined him to play on the song titled “Let Love Rule”.

In 1989, Lenny released his debut album, Let Love Rule, a funk and rock combination with a 1960s Vibe. The album was a huge success in the U.S. and spread across Europe.

His Wife, Liza Bonet, also helped direct the debut music video for “Let Love Rule”.

Lenny was signed with the Talent booking agency CAA with the help of Stephen Smith; they were fielding offers for Kravitz. The first offer was on a club tour, opening slots for Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, the Heartbreakers and David Bowie.

He released a deluxe edition of Let Love Rule by Virgin in May 2009. He used it to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the song.

Lenny performed the song “Cold Turkey” at the John Lennon Memorial concert. He produced and co-wrote a song with Ingrid Chavez titled “Justify My Love” for Madonna.

The song was one of her greatest hits album, The Immaculate Collection, due to its explicit videos.

In 1991, he produced a self-titled album, Vanessa Paradis, for Vanessa Paradis, a French singer and actress. Same year, he released his second album, Mama Said which reached the Top 40. The song lyrics were centred on his ex-wife Bonet; he was talking about his depression over their breakup.

His song Are You Gonna Go My Way, released in 1993, reached number 12 on the Billboard 200, and Kravitz won a BRIT Award in 1994 as the best international male artist 1994.

His sixth album, Lenny, was released in October 2001. He was obtained and detained by the Miami Police Department. The reason is that the police stated that he matched the bank robber’s description. After that incident, the police apologized for the wrong identity. Immediately after his release, he wrote the song “Bank Robber Man”.

In May 2004, his seventh album, Baptism, was released. The first single was titled “Where Are We Runnin”. On October 30, 2005, his tour began. But a night before the date, October 29, he lost his father. While performing, he gave the breaking news to the crowd. He added that it was not a time of mourning and that it was a time to celebrate because his father is in heaven now. The tour was a huge success, ending in Anaheim, California, on February 25, 2006.
