Henry found his calling when he was 8 years old after watching a PBS special on acting. At an open audition in San Antonio, he got a part in the 1981 Sissy Spacek film Raggedy Man. Following the release of E. T the Extra terrestial, he struggled with the popularity and recognition he got.

Spader was born on February 7th, 1960 in Boston, Massachusetts, and is the youngest of three children. His parents, Jean (née Fraser) and Stoddard (“Todd”) Greenwood Spader, were both teachers.

He has two older sisters, Libby Spader and Annie Spader.

Spader grew up in a progressive home surrounded by “dominant and influential women … that left a great impression”. During his early education, he attended multiple private schools, including The Pike School, where his mother taught art, and the Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts, where his father taught.

He later transferred to Phillips Academy in Andover, with director Peter Sellers, where he befriended former President’s son John F. Kennedy, Jr., before dropping out at the age of seventeen in eleventh grade and moving to New York City to pursue his acting career. On his way to becoming While trying to break through into the entertainment industry, and become a full-time actor, Spader undertook jobs such as bartending, teaching yoga, driving a meat truck, loading railroad cars, and being a stable boy.

Though many of his family members were professors and scholars, his contrasting interest in acting made him forego his formal education and enroll at New York’s ‘Michael Chekhov School’ to pursue acting.


Spader’s first major film role was in the film Endless Love (1981) although his first film was ‘Team-Mates’ (1978).

In 1983, he began his television career with ‘The Family Tree’ and went on to work in several other series.

He later appeared in more successful films such as “The Bostonians (1984), Street Smart (1987), The Aspern Papers in London’s West End, The Remains of the Day (1993), and in the plays Fifth of July on Broadway.

On 27th of May 1995, Christopher Reeve broke his neck when he was thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia. The injury he sustained paralyzed him from his shoulders down, and he used a wheelchair and ventilator for the rest of his life.

From his wheelchair, Reeve returned to creative work, directing In the Gloaming (1997) and acting in the television remake of Rear Window (1998). He also made several appearances in the Superman-themed television series Smallville, and wrote two autobiographical books, Still Me and Nothing is Impossible. Over the course of his career, Reeve received an Emmy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Grammy award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

In the early 1980s, Christopher Revee was an activist for environmental and human-rights causes and for artistic freedom of expression. After his accident, he attempted a spinal injury research, including human embryonic stem cell research, and for better insurance coverage for people with disabilities. His support project involved leading the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and co-founding the Reeve-Irvine Research Center. Christopher Reeve passed away on October 10, 2004, 15 days after his 52nd birthday.


Superman’ and Other Films

The actor catapulted to stardom when, following a two-year casting search, he was selected to play the titular superhero of Superman (1978). The popularity of the film, and Reeve’s winning portrayals of the Man of Steel and his alter ego, Clark Kent, spawned the release of Superman sequels in 1980, 1983 and 1987.

Reeve also starred in Somewhere in Time (1980), Deathtrap (1982), The Aviator (1985) and a TV movie adaptation of Anna Karenina (1985), during which time he developed a fascination with horse riding. His post-Superman films included Noises Off (1992), Morning Glory (1994) and Village of the Damned (1995).

Injury and Paralysis

In May 1995 Reeve became paralyzed from the neck down when he sustained a severe cervical spinal injury in a horse-riding accident. Despite his health challenges and him been confined to a wheelchair and needing a respirator to assist with his breathing, he became heavily involved in campaigns supporting handicapped children and paraplegics, testifying before a Senate subcommittee in favor of federal funding for stem cell research.

Reeve tirelessly sought to overcome the limitations of his condition, undergoing an experimental operation in 2003 that enabled him to breathe for hours without use of his respirator.

Marriage and family

He was married to Dana. They both had a son called William.

After Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation was launched in 1996, the actor merged his organization with the American Paralysis Association in 1999 to form a strong advocate for the disabled in the pursuit to increase awareness, fund spinal cord research and forge medical breakthroughs. The foundation’s name was given another name which is the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation in 2007′.

Directing and Books

Christopher continued to work after his ongoing rehabilitation. He went back to acting in a television production of Rear Window (1998), for which he picked up a Golden Globe nomination, and directed two television films with health themes, In the Gloaming (1997) and The Brooke Ellison Story (2004). Reeve also wrote two autobiographical books, Still Me (1998) and Nothing is Impossible:

Christopher Reeve died from cardiac arrest on October 10, 2004. He was survived by his wife Dana and son William, as well as his two children, Matthew and Alexandra, from his previous relationship with model Gae Exton.
