Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (born on March 29, 1952) also known as Jagaban is a popular Nigeria Accountant and Politician who has been the National leader of the All Progressives Congress since 2013 when the party was formed.
He was the 12th Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and Senator for Lagos west constituency during the third republic.
In 2022, he declared his intention to run for the 2023 presidential election and is currently the flagbearer under the All Progressives Congress party.

Early Life and Educational Background
Tinubu was born on 24th March, 1952 in Gombe State into a Muslim family but grew up in Lagos State. His mother, Abibato Mogaji was a trader, who later became the Iyaloja of Lagos State.
He started his education at St John’s Primary school, Aroloya, Lagos State and Children Homeschool Ibadan, south west of Nigeria.
He traveled to abroad in 1975 to study Accountant at first, Richard J. Daley College in Chicago, Illinois, and then at Chicago State University. He graduated in 1979 and obtained a Bachelor of science degree in Accounting.
In his first year in Chicago State University, Bola Ahmed was given the privilege to teach other students in his faculty. During his stay in the university, he made it through the Dean’s list and was awarded with many awards like: The Outstanding Student’s Award, the university Scholar’s Award, Certificate of Merit in Accounting and Finance and the Prestigious Sumna cum laude for accumulating the total Gp of 3.54 out of 4.0.
In his finals, he contested for the presidential election of the accounting Society of the institution and won the position.
Early Career
Tinubu career journey started in America, where he worked for the American companies like Arthur Anderson, Deloitte Haskins & Sells(now known as Deloitte Haskins & Touche) and GTE services Corporation– the largest communication and utility company in the United States of America.
After his return to Nigeria in 1983,He joined Mobil Oil company, He was so skillful and knowledgeable about his work which earned him another position as the company’s treasurer before he retired.
His passion to serve the masses led him into owning an auditing and communicative Television station known as Television Continental(TVC)– the Nigeria’s first 24-hour News Channel, which was established in 2012.He is also the one of the richest Landlord in Nigeria with estimated numbers of hotels, houses, land properties and others.
He is the owner of Lakowe near Abijo, Ibeju-Lekki; Ikoyi Estate Foreshore, Oyinkan Abayomi, Ikoyi, Asokoro in Abuja, Atlantic beachfront, the choice property, Eleko junction and others properties in Lagos.
Political Career
Bola Tinubu took interest in a political affairs In 1992 when he joined the Social Democratic party. He was a member of the People Front faction led by Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and made up of Other Strong Politicians such as UmarYar’Adua, AtikuAbubakar, Baba GanaKingibe, Raibu, Kwankwaso and others.
He was elected to the Senate representing the Lagos West constituency in the short-lived Nigerian Third Republic.
After the results of the 12 June,1993 presidential elections were dissolved, Tinubu became a founding member of the pro-democracy group, National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) a group which mobilized support for the restoration of democracy and recognition of Moshood Abiola as winner of the 12 June,1993 presidential election.
He went into exile in 1994 due to constant detention, harassment, arrest and threats, when General Sani Abacha took over the Nigerian political power as Military head of state.
Tinubu didn’t stop the fight to restore the Democratic governance in Nigeria as he joined the NADECO which was abroad. He returned to Nigeria in 1998 after the death of General Sani Abacha, and joined the National Reconciliation and Development.
In the marathon interview he had with the TheNewsnigeria, he revealed how he escaped from Sani Abacha Regime, the NADECO formation, exile and his return.
He said:
“I disguised with a huge turban and babanriga and escaped into Benin Republic on a motorbike. My old Hausa friend gave the clothes to me. In fact, when I appeared to Kudirat Abiola, she didn’t know that I was the one! I gave her some information and some briefing. I left at 1 a.m. While in Benin Republic, I was still coming to Badagry to ferry people, organise and coordinate the struggle with others on ground. We put a group together, ferrying NADECO people across. It was a very challenging time. I can’t forget people like Segun Maiyegun and other young guys in the struggle. I would come from Benin to hold meetings with them and sneak back.”
In 1999, Bola Tinubu was a protègè of Alliance for Democracy (AD) leaders Abraham Adesanya and Ayo Adebanjo. He went on to win the Ad primaries for the Lagos State governorship elections, in competition with Funsho Williams and Wahab Dosunmu, a former Minister of works and housing. In January 1999, he stood for the position of Governor of Lagos State under Alliance of Democracy party tickets and was elected Governor.
As Governor of Lagos State
He resumed office in May 1999 and promised housing of 10,000units to the less privileged. During his two tenure as Lagos State Governor, he has made a huge investment in Lagos State Educational sector, which provided a huge turn up for those who were not able to attend school due to their circumstances. He awarded for new road constructions, required to meet the needs of the populated state.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu along side his new deputy governor, Femi Pedro, won the re-election into office as governor in April 2003. Others states were under the people democratic Party in those elections.
During his struggles with Olusegun Obasanjo on the controlled of federal government over the right to create new local Council Development Area(LCDAs) to meet up its large population. This led to the seizure of funds by the federal government which were meant to be allocated to the local councils in the state.
Throughout his second tenure, he was involved in a clash with PDP powers such as Adeseye Ogunlewe, a former Lagos state senator, who has become minister of works and Bode George, the southwest chairman of the PDP.
In 2007, Femi Pedro declared his intention to run for the governor under APC but withdrew his name on the eve of the party nomination. He abandoned to Labour party while still as the deputy governor.
On 29 May,2007, Tinubu ended his tenure as his successor Babatunde Fashiola emerged as the New Lagos State governor under the wings of Action Congress Party.
Controversies
In April 2007, after the general elections before Babatunde Fashola, the governor-elect sworn into office. The Federal Government brought Tinubu before the Code of Conduct Bureau for trials over the alleged illegal operation of sixteen separate foreign accounts.
In January 2009, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission cleared Tinubu, James Ibori of Delta State and Obong Victor Attah of AkwaIbom State of charges of conspiracy, money laundering, abuse of office and official corruption in the sale of V-mobile shares in 2004.
In March 2009, there was a plot to kill Tinubu but didn’t carry out due to the involvement of the Inspector General of police, Mike Okiro, who thoroughly investigated the case.
However, there were reports that the British Metropolitan police were investigating transaction made by Governor Bola Tinubu over his investment in the social network Econet, now known as Airtel in September 2009. He released a statement over the reasons for such investment and how the state benefited from it.
The cases were closed by the Federal Government by rejecting the request made by the British to release the evidence needed to carryout the investigation and prosecution of the three Nigerian ex-governors in the London court.
Bola Tinubu has been seen as the Godfather of Lagos State. This has been exposed in the filming documentary, the lion of Bourdillion, in 2015. Tinubu filed a N150 billion libel suit which ended the airing of the documentary on March 2015.
During the 2019 elections, a bullion van was seen parading the city and entering Tinubu residence in Bourdillion road, in Ikoyi. Bola claimed that he can keep money anywhere he want.

In 2006, when Atiku wanted to become the gubernatorial candidate of his party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to submerged the Olusegun Obansanjo over his ambition to succeed Atiku in becoming the Nigeria President in 2011 elections.
Tinubu wanted the vice president of Nigeria Atiku Abubakar to become the gubernatorial candidate of his Party, The Action Congress with the intention of becoming his running mate in the 2011 presidential election.
Unfortunately, he was turned down by Atiku and instead chose a running mate, Ben Obi from the South East.
Even though, Atiku accepted his offer to run the election on his platform still the PDP still won the Election.
On April 2007, when PDP won the 2007 presidential elections, Bola Tinubu was trying to form a “Mega-party” that would stand against the opposition party PDP. He was active in all the negotiations to bring all oppositions party- the Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN), the Congress of Progressive Change(CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP),a faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and the New PDP (nPDP), a faction of then ruling People’s Democratic Party- together to form a strong party named All Progressive Party capable of challenging the PDP in 2011.
On July 2009, he made sure that the implementation of the electoral reforms in the Uwa is report to be a fair and free election like the 1993 election had been.
On December 2009, there were reports that Babatunde Fashola and Bola Tinubu had issue over Fashola running for reelection in 2011.
Then, Tinubu was supporting the commissioner for Environment, Muiz Banire, which made him to form a new party named All progressive Congress Party(APC) alongside Muhammadu Buhari. His intention was to build a stronger party that can stand against the ruling party PDP.
In 2014, Tinubu supported Muhammed Buhari as the APC presidential flagbearer with the intention of becoming his Vice-President but later surrendered to Yemi Osibanjo, his ally and former Commisioner for Justice.
In 2015, Buhari Muhammed won the presidential election under the wings of APC, ending the sixteen year of PDP in power and marking the first time in history of Nigeria that an Prevalent president lost to the opposition candidate. Till date, Tinubu has played an important role in Buhari’s administration and had supported him in his second presidential election beating their opponent Atiku Abubakar and emerging as the winner of 2019 presidential election.
2023 Presidential Ambition.
On Monday being the 10th day of January, 2022, Tinubu declared his intention to the public to run for the 2023 Presidential election. He came out as the winner of his party presidential primary election scoring the total of 1,271 votes defeating Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and Rotimi Amaechi who scored 235 and 316 votes respectively.
He chose Karibu Masari as his running mate but was opposed by his party delegates in the court to stop INEC from doing so and find another candidate as his running mate.
Personal Life
Bola Tinubu got married to Olerumi Tinubu, who is a RCCG Pastor and the current Senator of Lagos Central Senatorial district in 1987. Although, there were news that she was not his first wife.
The couple are blessed with 6kids but lost their first son, Jide Tinubu, who had a heart attack in London and was later confirmed dead on October 31,2017.It was a great loss to the family.
Tinubu’s mother Abibatu Mogaji, died on 15 June, 2013, at the age of 96. His youngest daughter graduated from Music college in Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 2013.
